Writers often base their stories on actual people, places, and events, either from their own lives or the lives of others. But translating real life into compelling fiction can be a challenge - it often requires letting go of "what really happened" in favor of what best serves the story. In this presentation, author and writing teacher Carmela Martino describes some of the steps in this process. Using examples from her own works, she shares techniques for creating composite characters, researching setting details, and mining memories for story ideas.
This program is part of the Inside Writing & Publishing series. It is cosponsored with participating north and northwest suburban libraries.
The 1501 Ellinwood Street library building is the realization of a longheld dream of the library board, staff and community partners. Located in the heart of downtown Des Plaines, the four story, 82,000 square foot building represents the community's commitment to reading, lifelong learning, and a center for family activities. A grand central staircase and large windows provide a wealth of natural light and illuminate the building at night.
