The Unsinkable Princess Author Event with Faly Colaizzi
Registration Opens August 1
Thursday, August 27
6:30pm - 7:30pm
Des Plaines Public Library
Meeting Room AJoin Faly Colaizzi and her mother, Des Plaines resident, Rafaela Hart as they share their story. A story of love, trauma and resilience.
Faly Colaizzi, the author of The Unsinkable Princess will read from her book, and present her gripping memoir with her mother in an engaging conversation with our host librarian.
Colaizzi’s book tells the saga of her mother, Rachel, and her own traumatic family life under the thumb of a pathological, violent man. In the 70s, men controlled the purse strings, and the battered woman’s movement was in its nascence. Faly Colaizzi’s family needed police and legal support that was, unfathomably, difficult to get. The title of the book and the author’s visit provide a hint at the hopeful ending.
To supplement the event, the Des Plaines Police Department Social Worker and the Des Plaines Library Social Worker will be on hand to discuss legal rights and resources for victims of domestic violence.
Des Plaines Public Library
The 1501 Ellinwood Street library building is the realization of a longheld dream of the library board, staff and community partners. Located in the heart of downtown Des Plaines, the four story, 82,000 square foot building represents the community's commitment to reading, lifelong learning, and a center for family activities. A grand central staircase and large windows provide a wealth of natural light and illuminate the building at night.
