December 2025 marks the 250th birthday of Jane Austen - literary icon, who continues to entertain, delight, and inspire generations of readers.


As we continue our celebration of Jane Austen, join us for a screening of the 1996 film adaptation of Jane's fourth novel, Emma. In this period romantic comedy, Emma Woodhouse, a young woman of privilege, involves herself in the affairs of the neighborhood and fancies herself an accomplished matchmaker.


The film stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma and Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly, with a stellar supporting cast.  Compare this traditional more idyllic adaptation of Emma to the 2020 film starring Anya Taylor-Joy. The 2020 film offers a more self-centered Emma with progressive themes like women's empowerment.

The 1501 Ellinwood Street library building is the realization of a longheld dream of the library board, staff and community partners. Located in the heart of downtown Des Plaines, the four story, 82,000 square foot building represents the community's commitment to reading, lifelong learning, and a center for family activities. A grand central staircase and large windows provide a wealth of natural light and illuminate the building at night.
