December 2025 marks the 250th birthday of Jane Austen - literary icon, who continues to entertain, delight, and inspire generations of readers.
As we celebrate Jane Austen, join us for a screening of the 1940 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Jane’s most famous novel. When two eligible bachelors come to the neighborhood, Mrs. Bennett is determined to make a match for her oldest daughter Jane.
The film stars Greer Garson as Lizzie Bennett and Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy. The production is a less faithful adaptation of the novel than the 1995 BBC miniseries. The lavish sets and flamboyant costumes were not accurate to the period. In spite of the inaccuracies, the spirit of the film is in keeping with Austen's portrait of 19th century social mores. If you have never seen this adaptation, you might enjoy comparing it to the more familiar versions. The film received the Academy Award for Best Art Direction, Black and White.
The 1501 Ellinwood Street library building is the realization of a longheld dream of the library board, staff and community partners. Located in the heart of downtown Des Plaines, the four story, 82,000 square foot building represents the community's commitment to reading, lifelong learning, and a center for family activities. A grand central staircase and large windows provide a wealth of natural light and illuminate the building at night.
